Real Madrid Sack Coach, Appoints La Liga Legend Raul

Real Madrid have decided to dismiss Alvaro Benito as the coach of the Juvenil B team after his comments on television and radio, with La Liga icon, Raul Gonzalez replacing him.

Reports that Raul returned to Madrid three years ago as he underwent his coaching badges and took charge of one of the youth sides, where he has been for two seasons. But, he will now have a promotion to working with the Juvenil B team.

Sacked Benito came through the club as a youth player and made his first-team debut in 1995 under Jorge Valdano, sharing his first-team opportunities with Guti Hernandez. Injuries prevented him from reaching his potential as he was regularly in the treatment room. His final club in a very brief career was Getafe.

Benito had been at the club for three seasons after managing youth teams at Collado Villalba. His start came at the youngest age groups of Real Madrid’s La Fabrica and the former footballer eventually stepped up to the Juvenil B side, which he managed until Wednesday.

He has guided the Juvenil B team to second in the table, only behind Atletico Madrid but with a game in hand. His sacking was not due to sporting reasons, but simply because the club did not like his comments to Movistar and Cadena SER.

Interestingly, Benito was not only a professional footballer. He is the vocalist/guitarist of Rock band Pignoise.

During his rehabilitation period, Benito started playing the guitar and writing songs, going on to put together the band, Pignoise. The group, which also featured another former footballer, Héctor Polo (Real Zaragoza, Rayo Vallecano), eventually used many of the songs he composed prior to its creation.

Raul, 41 who was managing the Cadete B side, will be Benito’s substitute and will debut this weekend against Leganés B. He was Real Madrid’s all-time highest goalscorer before Cristiano Ronaldo scooped the honour.
