The acting General Officer Commanding (acting GOC), 8 Task Force division of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Stevenson Olabanji, has said only troops will fight and clear the remnants of Boko Haram terrorists in the country.

Olabanji’s claim is coming days after the leader of a faction of the Boko Haram sect, Abu Shekau, released a video claiming responsibility for the latest attack on Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state.

While addressing officers and soldiers at the headquarters of the 133 Special Forces Battalion Kangarwa, northern Borno state, during a familiarization visit, the GOC further raised the hopes that insurgency can be stopped in Nigeria.

He described the Nigerian Army as the bastion of democracy and freedom in adding that this was why its men are currently deployed across other states of the federation dealing with one internal security challenge or another.

The top military chief added that their colleagues who were not in the north-east are similarly dealing with challenges of insecurity where they are.

“Therefore, no one will end Boko Haram Insurgency in Nigeria but the Nigerian soldiers,” he said in a statement signed by Col Timothy Antigha, the deputy director of public relations of the Army.

He also assured troops who have overstayed in the operational area that they would soon be given the opportunity to go home during the ongoing rotation exercise.

Olabanji commended the tenacity and courage of the troops in the face of a determined enemy and conveyed the appreciation and good wishes of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai to the troops.

He assured them that the leadership of the Nigerian Army is fully committed to their welfare and urged them to continue the relentless pursuit and routing of the remnants of Boko Haram terrorists wherever they might be within 8 Task Force Division's area of responsibility.

It was earlier reported how the faction of the Boko Haram belonging to Abu Shekau claimed responsibility for the recent sneak attack on Maiduguri, Borno state.

They also said they were ready to continue to fight on as they were not prepared for any dialogue with the federal government led by President Muhammadu Buhari.
